Miss Porter's Science and Technology Camp

American School for the Deaf

* Summer Camp Success
(WTNH) _ School's almost out, so how do you accomplish summer camp success? By sending your child to the right camp. These days summer camp is much more than swimming and archery.
News Channel 8's Judy Chong has the story.

Summer camp is not like it used to be. These young women chose to spend the 'dog days' in Farmington at Miss Porter's Science and Technology Camp for girls. Fun combined with learning.

Leslie Paisley, Summer Camper: "We didn't sit around fires roasting marshmallows - but at the same time it was hands-on stuff."

Some of Stephanie Higgins' classmates thought it an odd choice.

Stephanie Higgins, Summer Camper: "Did you get in trouble at home? Are your parents punishing you? Did you fail science? They couldn't understand why I like it so much."

There are many specialized & unusual camps these days. If that science camp doesn't suit you, then how about computer camp located in Fairfield and Orange for kids from ages 8 to 18. Call 1.203.2795.9667. Prices range from $460-$590.

Perhaps theater camp would be a more dramatic option. That's Showbiz Dance in Stratford is offering the camp for youngsters age 6 to 12. Call 1.203.380.8888. Cost is $225.

Here's another choice, engineering camp for minorities interested in the field. It's sponsored by the Coast Guard Academy in New London for high school juniors. The best thing about it is it's all expenses paid. Call 1.800.333.8724.

There's a summer camp that meets almost every kind of interest and almost every segment of the population. The American School for the Deaf in West Hartford offers a place to go for the hearing impaired. Kids from all around the country go to the Berkshires for a week to socialize and play.

Peter Bailey, Camp Director: "It's a great opportunity to find out where you're from, which state, what the school experience is like."

Whether the goal is fun, or fun with a purpose, the lazy days of summer are made busy with camps.
