Trooper Dean Griffin, Connecticut State Police: "Ideally what we'd like to do is have a crane of some sort to pull them out." State police say a hiker tipped them off that this quarry was possibly a dumping ground for unwanted cars. Investigators say divers found eight or nine vehicles piled up under water.
Leon: "Why are they stacked up?" First up a '93 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Detectives say this four by four was reported stolen April 27th from Higganum. Police say clearing out the rest of the cars from the quarry will take all day. Lt. Wayne Rioux, Connecticut State Police: "We'll determine who is the owner, notify the police department on the case, and we'll determine whether it's a stolen car or whether it's an insurance fraud car." By the end of their search investigators found 10 cars. They say the cars may have been dumped in the quarry since before 1992. ©1999 WTNH/WTNH-DT |
