* Police investigating body pulled from river
(Old Lyme-AP) _ State police are investigating the death of a man found by the banks of the Connecticut River. The body is was that of a white man, but police would not release his identity or any details about the cause of death. The body was found Saturday afternoon near the Raymond E. Baldwin Bridge where I-95 crosses the river. Sgt. Ron Bastura of Troop F in Westbrook said troopers found the body in connection with their attempt to locate a specific person, but would not say if the body they found was that of the person they were looking for.

* Girl injured in hit and run
(West Haven-AP) _ Police say they haven't found the driver who struck a 10-year-old East Hampton girl in a hit-and-run accident. The girl, who was struck by a dark-colored vehicle shortly after eight last night while crossing a West Haven Street, is still reported to be in critical condition. The car, which police say sustained front end damage, fled the scene. The girl was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Her name has not been released. Anyone with information is asked to contact West Haven police at 1.203.937.3900.

* Friends, churchgoers mourn victims of crash
(Middletown-WTNH) _ A memorial was placed on the scene of a crash that killed five people Friday. A cross marks the spot where witnesses say a pickup truck traveling north veered across the median and slammed head on into a car heading southbound. The victims were identified as Gerard and Ester Weitzman of Cromwell, and Frank Zlotowski and Rosemary Loffredo of Middletown. The driver of the pick-up, Jose Ribiero, was also killed.

* Car misses hitting church
(Hamden-WTNH) _ Quite a scare at a Hamden church Sunday morning. Police say 71-year old Susan Amendola lost control of her car on Whitney Avenue and ran over some bushes near the Whitneyville Church. Police say Amendola crossed over the center line and into a grassy area in front of the church, stopping just short of the building. Amendola can't remember what happened, and police think a medical problem may have caused the accident.

* Meriden man killed in motorcycle accident
(Meriden-AP) _ A 22-year-old Meriden man is dead after crashing his motorcycle on a city street. Police say Gilberto Salas died when he lost control of his 1986 Yamaha, crashing into a tree on the side of the road about 4:30 pm Saturday. Salas was taken to Mid-State Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police say he may have been racing when the accident occurred.

* Teens arrested in shooting incident
(East Hampton-WTNH) _ Five teens are under arrest after a reported shooting in East Hampton. Early Sunday afternoon a state trooper spotted a car that was reportedly involved in some type of shooting. They won't release any more details. After searching the vehicle, police found a .22 caliber pistol and more than four ounces of marijuana. The teens are due in Norwich Superior Court next month.

* Deputy sheriff sues supervisors
(Hartford-AP) _ A New London County special deputy sheriff is suing his supervisors, claiming they conspired with a statewide sheriffs advisory board to cheat him and his colleagues out of civil action service fees. Special Deputy Sheriff Waldren Phillips brought the action Friday in U.S. District Court in Hartford against Sheriff Gerard Egan, Chief Deputy Sheriff Thomas Connors, Sheriff's Capt. Daniel Tamborra, the Statewide High Sheriffs Advisory Board, the Connecticut State Sheriffs Association and the state.

* Developer faces charges of illegally dumping asbestos
(New Haven-AP) _ A developer who renovated a downtown building will be tried on charges of illegally removing and dumping asbestos. Melvin Weintraub has been charged in U.S. District Court with using untrained and unprotected workers to remove asbestos during work on the Liberty Building in 1997.

* Teacher Retirement package drafted
(Waterbury-AP) _ Waterbury officials say they're putting together an early retirement package for some of the city's teachers. City officials say the plan would save more than a million dollars over its first two years by replacing employees at the top of the pay scale with starting-salary employees. The plan could substantially add to the 27 teachers and 10 administrators who already plan to retire at the end of the school year. As of Friday, more than 100 had expressed interest, including those who had already announced retirements. The figure included 97 teachers and 14 administrators, including seven head principals and five assistant principals.

* Competition off to slow start as public educated about deregulation
(Hartford-AP) _ No electric companies have registered to compete for customers under Connecticut's electric deregulation law, even though they can start signing up customers July 1. The state agency that licenses electric competitors said it's not worried about the absence of competitors for Connecticut's 1.3 million electric customers.

* New Miss Connecticut selected
(Montville-AP) _ She took the crown in Montville, now it's off to Atlantic City where Sylvia Gomes will compete in the Miss America Pageant. The 20-year-old Gomes won the Miss Connecticut Pageant last night at the Mohegan Sun Casino Gomes, who represented Hamden at the 71st annual pageant, won the talent portion of the contest with a piano number. The 20-year-old Gomes wins a four thousand dollar scholarship and a chance to compete in the Miss America Pageant in September. Gomes is a junior majoring in studio art and art history at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
