The Northeast Direct trains that usually go by way of Providence and New London will instead stop in Hartford, Springfield and Worcester, Amtrak officials said. The affected trains are the 7:55 a.m. out of Boston, and the 3:55 and 9:40 p.m. out of New York. Amtrak will provide a substitute shuttle bus service for passengers who usually board or leave the diverted trains at Old Saybrook, New London, and Mystic. Several other daily trains will run their usual route along the Connecticut shoreline. The change is being made because Amtrak is doing electrification work along the shoreline for the new high-speed service that is to begin at year's end. The $170 million project is expected to shave about an hour off the more than four hour trip from Boston to New York. The detour begins this week and is expected to last throughout the summer. ©1999 WTNH/WTNH-DT |
