This is a big development in this case. The spotlight is now on former detective Raucci. City hall says it's better to make sure Raucci didn't do anything wrong rather than assume he didn't do anything wrong. Ruth Toms, Lewis' Mother: "I'm excited, I'm glad that finally something's happening. and I hope that we'll finally get some justice." A glimmer hope after years of struggle for these family members trying to clear the names of Scott Lewis and Stefan Morant, who are in prison on a 120 year sentence for double murder. Linda Morant, Morant's Mother: "Today's Stefan's birthday, he's 31 and he's been in prison for almost 5 years for a crime he did not commit." The 2 men say they were framed by a crooked cop - New Haven detective Vincent Raucci. An FBI report, obtained by News Channel 8, found numerous inconsistencies with testimony that convicted Lewis. The FBI also found that Lewis had a solid alibi on the night the former alderman and his companion were shot to death in 1990. This report is the reason why Mayor John DeStefano wrote a letter to the New Haven police chief asking for an investigation. The letter says in part "It would be prudent to re-open the investigation to determine whether detective Raucci's role in the Turner/Fields investigation did or did not create a situation in which an individual is inappropriately incarcerated for murder." Michael Jefferson, Lewis' Attorney: "The only thing Scott Lewis and Stefan Morant want is justice, and we're presented with a huge opportunity to obtain just that, and I only hope that it's not squandered." News Channel 8 found Chief Mel Wearing having lunch with FBI agents today. We wanted to talk to him about the investigation, but the chief would not answer our questions.
