* Proposal would set up a network of the state's academic libraries
(Hartford-AP) - High school students could be doing research at the state's colleges and universities under the proposed Connecticut Virtual Library.

That's one benefit of the proposal making its way through the state legislature. The plan to link the state's libraries would create a network of on-line resources with information on health, science, court cases, literature and other subjects for Connecticut students.

"This is really the great equalizer," said Rep. Brian J. Flaherty, R-Watertown, who is cosponsoring the legislation with Rep. Kosta Diamantis, D-Bristol.

The proposed state budget includes $1 million to get the project started. The money would go toward buying subscriptions for on-line databases, such as Lexus Nexus and Health Reference Center, and on-line texts, technical support and a library coordinator.

"It will maximize the use of public funds," said Mary Johnson, the chief fiscal officer for the state Department of Higher Education.
