Jesse Jackson delivers message of mercy to Mitchell College grads
(New London-WTNH) _ Reverend Jesse Jackson brought a message of peace and mercy to the graduating class of Mitchell College in New London Saturday. After freeing three former US prisoners of war from Yugoslavia, the focus in New London was on his push for diplomacy and not more bombings in the Balkans.

Graduating class at UConn marked by bookend championships
(Storrs-AP) _ The cramming and long nights of poring over books for final exams officially ended Saturday for the 5,400 graduates at the University of Connecticut, and it was time for these words of wisdom: Read more.
Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough imparted that advice to the graduates at the 116th graduation.

(Hamden-WTNH) _ Graduation time can mean only one thing: The search is on to find jobs. A survey done by SNET found most Connecticut college graduates are taking advantage of new high-tech job hunting techniques.

Toddler Critically injured in fall
(New Haven-WTNH) _ A two year old West Haven boy remains in critical condition after falling from a balcony. It happened Friday night in at an apartment on Spring Street. The child apparently crawled up onto a bike which was on the balcony.
He then went over the top of the railing and fell about fifteen feet. The boy is being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Sailor charged with injuring his son
(New London-AP) _A sailor stationed at the Groton submarine base has been accused of seriously injuring his six-month-old son. Authorities say Sean Tobin, 19, was arrested last weekend after his son Vincent was rushed to the hospital with brain injuries. The child, apparently suffering from shaken baby syndrome, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and placed on a life-support machine. Tobin was arrested and held in New London on $150,000 bond. He is charged with assault and risk of injury to a minor. Police said Tobin told them he was under stress due to marital, work and financial pressures and became upset when his son wouldn't stop crying.
Newspapers challenge judge's order to close Ross hearing
(New London-AP) _ Two newspapers are challenging a state judge's orders that would bar the public and media from attending part of the death penalty retrial of serial killer Michael Ross. The Day of New London and The Hartford Courant filed the appeal Friday in Appellate Court, a day after Superior Court Judge Thomas Miano ordered the courtroom closed.

Woman accused of stalking "Highlander" star
(Coventry-AP) _ A Coventry woman has been charged with making threatening phone calls to the star of the TV show "Highlander, The Series." 38-year-old Cheryl Roberts, of Coventry, was arrested yesterday at her home on a federal warrant from California. Police say actor Adrian Paul often received 20 to 30 calls a day from Roberts starting in February 1998, although police said some calls may date back to 1996. Assistant US. Attorney Nora Dannehy says several of the calls were threatening in nature. Coventry Police Chief Beau Thurnauer says his officers armed with a search warrant, seized "handwritten notes and utility bills" that could support the charges. A US. District Court judge in Hartford has ordered Roberts held for 30 days at Cedarcrest Hospital in Newington while psychiatrists evaluate her competence to stand trial in California.
Hartford man dies after shooting himself during traffic stop
(Hartford-AP) _ A Hartford man died two days after shooting himself in the head when he was stopped by a state trooper in Vernon earlier this week.
Authorities said they don't know why James Fortin shot himself, first in the hand and then in the head during a motor vehicle stop late Tuesday on Route 83.
Fortin, 46, died Thursday at Hartford Hospital where he had been in critical condition since the shooting.
State Police Sgt. Paul Roy at Troop C in Tolland said Fortin grabbed a pistol from under his car seat when the trooper asked to see his license after following the motorist from Ellington to Vernon. Roy said the trooper grabbed Fortin's wrist but that Fortin broke free and shot himself.
Kite festival benefits hospital
(Madison-WTNH) _ The spring breeze picked up just in time at Hammonasset Beach State Park Saturday, and it had kite lovers flying high.
Middlesex Hospital hosted the first annual Soundwinds Kite Festival. Nearly 4,000 participants of all ages came out to show off their kites, take flying lessons, or learn how to build a kite. Corporate sponsors helped support the event. All proceeds will benefit the hospital's community programs.
Laura Martino, Middlesex Hospital: "We serve a lot of people in the mental health area we do a lot of flu clinics - things like well child clinics screenings health types of screenings and we need - we need money to do those types of things."
The hospital hopes to make $30,000.
