* Psychiatrisy says Curtis competant to stand trial for murder
(Bridgeport-WTNH) _ Some say he was getting away with murder. Kenneth Curtis was back in court for a competency hearing Thursday. Years ago curtis was declared incompetent to stand trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. But in 1997, News Channel 8 found Curtis earning A's and B's in college classes. Now doctors have re-evaluated his condition.
News Channel 8's Verna Collins reports.

today the prosecution called one of it's strongest witnesses in an effort convince a judge that Kenneth Curtis has been faking his poor condition, but his defense team is doing all it can to poke holes in that argument.

Donna Kalson's family came to court today because they want to see the man they believe killed her, pay for the crime.

This is how Kenneth Curtis usually looks when he comes to court - barely functioning with his head bent. But in 1997, a News Channel 8 investigation found Curtis attending classes at Southern Connecticut State University.

Today, the state prosecutor called his first witness, a forensic psychiatrist who testified on the results of a psychological evaluation he conducted on Curtis earlier this year. In it, Dr. Paul Amble admits Curtis has some brain damage from shooting himself after his girlfriend was shot and killed, but Dr. Amble contends Curtis is exaggerating his condition.

Donna Kalson's family agrees.

"To know that somebody who murdered your sister is out functioning in the world, functioning socially in school. That should've been my sister's turn. That should've been her doing it not him. He doesn't deserve it."

Prosecutors expect the competency hearing to take at least 4 days. Attorneys will be calling many more doctors, but one of the biggest pieces of evidence is News Channel 8's videotape of Curtis in college, and prosecutors feel that will be hard for the defense to fight.
