Hartford is getting close to scoring 3 development projects less than 2 weeks after the stadium deal fell through. Mayor Mike Peters, (D) Hartford: "The city is not dead. It is alive and well. We are going to get better." Members of CEDA, Capital Economic Development Authority, along with legislative leaders, met behind closed doors with the governor to update the projects. The city agreed to sell the G.Fox building to developers Anthony Autorino and the Hutensky Group. Plans are to renovate the building and construct a parking garage. Greg Ghezzi, Avon: "The Patriots is what we were banking on to bring people into the city. If that is not going to work we have to do something else. The G.Fox building hasn't had anything in a long time." A redevelopment plan for the Civic Center is also moving along. The city favors Northland Investment of Massachusetts to raze the mall and convert it into 400 apartments, leaving the coliseum in place. Arthur Anderson, CEDA: "In addition there would be 800,000 square feet of specialty shops and a health club and movie theaters." Madeline Welborn, Windsor: "I think the apartments might keep more people downtown, and as far as the civic center goes it's empty. If we don't do anything we might as well tear it down." And as far as bringing people downtown there is a proposal to build a new campus for Hartford's Capital Community Technical College on Main street just north of G.Fox. Jessie Maclay, Manchester: "It's dead here after 6 at night. You really need something (going on 24 hours). A college here would would have more young people, a lot more alive, a lot more business." Just yesterday the city broke ground in the West end for a mega-movie theatre complex. Residents say its finally good to see some progress and with plans in place it appears the city is moving in the right direction. The state's community technical college system will vote Thursday on the recommendation to build the campus on main street. The Capital Economic Development Authority says the talks continue about Adriaen's Landing. They are still talking about the private sector investment. ©1999 WTNH/WTNH-DT |
