A 17-year-old Amsterdam, N.Y., youth has been charged with threatening to bomb McAlister Middle School in Suffield. Authorities said the threat was made late Saturday on an America Online chat room. The AOL chat-room threat was made around 11:30 p.m. Saturday to a McAlister eighth-grader, who then reported it to police and school officials on Sunday. Suffield Police Chief Peter N. Ingvertsen said officials spent about nine hours Sunday investigating, and representatives of America Online worked with police to track down the teen's address. In the other incidents, two teen-agers were charged Monday with making threats against Vernon Center Middle School. Police charged a 13-year-old girl with third-degree criminal mischief and breach of peace after the discovery of graffiti in a bathroom at the middle school that made a reference to "blowing up the school." A 15-year-old boy was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, breach of peace, and loitering on school property. Police said he wrote on a wall outside the school a message referring to a "bomb" and the date "5-10." The loitering charge stemmed from the fact that the boy was not a student at the school. Both teens are to be in juvenile court on May 18. ©1999 WTNH/WTNH-DT |
