* USS Miami returns from tour in Adriatic
(Groton-WTNH) _ A happy homecoming in Groton Thursday. The crew of the USS Miami returned to the sub base after an unusually eventful tour of duty. The Miami has been overseas for the last sixth months in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas. The sub and her crew took part in attacks on Iraq and Yugoslavia, firing dozens of tomahawk missiles. They got a heroes welcome on their return.
News Channel 8's Peter Standring reports.

It's always a special occasion when a submarine returns home, but in the Miami's case this was an unusually momentous event.

Cmdr. Jim Ransom, USS Miami: "It is different. The whole base turned out for us, the horns, the cheers as we came up the river, the guys were really excited!"

So was everyone else. While Miami was deployed overseas she and her crew saw an incredible amount of action, first firing missiles at Iraq during Operation: Desert Fox, and then a few weeks ago unloading their weapons at Yugoslavia. They're the first submarine since WWII to have fired their weapons in 2 separate combat theatres.

Adm. Edmund Giambastiani, U.S. Navy: "We call the Miami the Big Gun of the submarine force, and they deserve every bit of that accolade."

Apart from accolades there was also a lot of hugging and kissing going on as families were reunited. Two of the sailors actually met their children - babies they hadn't seen in person until today.

"Gary", Seaman, USS Miami: "I can't even describe it, really. I have been looking forward to this now for five months!"

Of course so have their loved ones. For them this particular voyage was especially nerve-wracking.

Deanna Dunn, Wife of Sailor: "To have these altercations, these situations where missiles are flying, ya really sit back and worry and wonder how are husbands are doing."

Now the worrying is over and the celebrating is under way. The mission's complete and for the Miami it was a job exceptionally well done.
