* News Channel 8 policy on bomb threats
(WTNH) _ Ever since the tragedy at Columbine High School in Colorado, there has been a rash of threats, bomb scares and rumors spreading throughout our nation's schools. There have been several incidents here in Connecticut. Some of those we have reported, and many we have not. Many of you have called to say there was a bomb threat at your child's school and you were surprised it was not on the news. We want to explain News Channel 8's policy on reporting threats at schools.

News Channel 8 does not report telephoned bomb threats, rumors of threats or unsubstantiated reports of incidents in our schools. Too often these telephoned threats are made simply to get attention. Reporting these threats is exactly what the caller wants, and breeds unnecessary fear in the community, and adds to the frequency of these types of threats. News Channel 8 only reports incidents that result in arrests or when an actual device is found.
This has been News Channel 8's policy for years, but we felt in this current time of heightened concern about what is happening in our schools that you understand why we report some school incidents and not others.
