Crisis in Kosovo Sailors Return From Duty at Sea
(WTNH) _ The fighting rages on as the Crisis in Kosovo enters a third night of attacks. NATO forces launched their first daylight strike against Yugoslavia. Officials also say NATO forces shot down two Yugoslav jet fighters over Bosnia. They say the fighters tried to attack NATO-led peacekeeping troops there. The Pentagon says all NATO planes involved in today's raid are safe. How is Connecticut reacting to the crisis? Sailors who've been at sea know the tension that's in the air, and under the water.
News Channel 8's Peter Standring reports.

Sailors On this day the crew of the USS San Juan' is somewhat relaxed. First taking part in a change of command ceremony and then giving tours of their boat. Just a couple of months ago though they were poised to do battle overseas.

Matthew Tomazic, USS San Juan: "To many people on this boat they are very envious of the fact that the Miami is over there shooting, because Miami is probably one of our biggest rivals."

Rivalrys aside, 'San Juan' was ready to strike Yugoslavia at a moment's notice. They were on high-alert for a month. That was in October before they were replaced by the USS Miami.

Cmdr. Joseph Mulloy, USS San Juan: "We never had to actually strike because diplomacy worked that time, this idea of a global Navy is you can bring force to bear without having to use it."

San Juan ceremony Our global Navy also calls for constant readiness and a constant cycle of deployments. Just this morning the USS Albuquerque left Groton to go replace 'Miami'. There's no telling what her mission will be.

Capt. Van Mauney, US Navy: "I can't say for sure where they are at the moment, once they leave on a deployment we do not operationally direct their activities."

Whatever activities these submariners are assigned, Navy brass is confident they'll do them well, here at home while in port and overseas in the time of conflict.

Admiral John Padgett, US Navy: "It really doesn't matter which of our fine attack subs we send to the Med, each one of them is ready for whatever happens to come up."
