Matthew Tomazic, USS San Juan: "To many people on this boat they are very envious of the fact that the Miami is over there shooting, because Miami is probably one of our biggest rivals." Rivalrys aside, 'San Juan' was ready to strike Yugoslavia at a moment's notice. They were on high-alert for a month. That was in October before they were replaced by the USS Miami. Cmdr. Joseph Mulloy, USS San Juan: "We never had to actually strike because diplomacy worked that time, this idea of a global Navy is you can bring force to bear without having to use it."
Capt. Van Mauney, US Navy: "I can't say for sure where they are at the moment, once they leave on a deployment we do not operationally direct their activities." Whatever activities these submariners are assigned, Navy brass is confident they'll do them well, here at home while in port and overseas in the time of conflict. Admiral John Padgett, US Navy: "It really doesn't matter which of our fine attack subs we send to the Med, each one of them is ready for whatever happens to come up."
