* CO Detectors Recalled
(WTNH) _ A North Carolina company is recalling several models of their carbon monoxide alarms, they may fail to detect dangerous conditions in homes. Carbon Monoxide poisoning can cause flu like symptoms, neurological damage and even death.
News Channel 8's Ned Berkowitz reports.

The west haven fire department responds to thousands of emergencies every year. Most are medical or fire calls, but a growing number are for carbon monoxide alarms - A record 77 so far this year. The department takes the calls very seriously.

Chief William Johnson, West Haven Fire Dept.: "Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It's lighter than air. It's a silent killer."

Last November, 44 apartments in West Haven's old armory building were evacuated and three people were sent to the hospital after a co detector went off. 10 parts per million is considered unsafe. Levels here were as high as a potentially fatal 400 parts per million. People we spoke with seem to be getting the message.

Michel Gusmano, West Haven: "Because I have children in the house and I've been hearing a lot of problems, people getting sick from it and potentially dying."

but what if your detector doesn't work? Today the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Kidde Safety Company announced a recall of about a million detectors. The plastic in the packaging of these products emitted a gas that could degrade the sensors. Some "Lifesaver" models could alarm late or not alarm at all, while "Nighthawk" models could alarm late.

At Gerbauers True Value Hardware store in West Haven they stock four different kinds of carbon monoxide detectors. Most will run you about $50, but you can get one for as little as $5.99. Chief Johnson recommends digital alarms.

The company that made the potentially faulty detectors has a form on it's website (www.nhawk.com) you can fill out to determine if your detector is one of the models being recalled, and help you get it repaired. If you're not online you can call toll free at 888.543.3346.

There have apparently been no injuries involving the company's products. They say the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The company promises to make any necessary repairs within thirty days.
