* Winter Makes a Mess in March
(WTNH) _ A wintery mess for many, but a day to play for others. That's what this end of winter snow storm meant for people across the state.
News Channel 8's Ned Berkowitz reports.

Job one this morning: clearing streets and sidewalks. Technology helps, but some have to do things the old fashioned way.

Ruth Swanton, New Haven: "Ah, I love the spring...."

With spring only a week away, the snow may look beautiful, but the wet, heavy white stuff knocked down power lines, as well as branches and trees on Ruth Swanton's front lawn.

Swanton: "They'll come and clear it away. I don't know how long it will take. We'll move it over to the side."

The DOT had all 632 of its trucks and 260 private contractors on the road by about 1:00 this morning. Nevertheless, commuters had more to worry about than slick road conditions.

Audra Hemphill, New Haven: "It was dangerous with the snow falling down from the trees. Like a battle zone."

Metro North says most trains were on time, partially because they ran trains all night to keep the lines clear.

The Walker kids were out this morning, working on an architectural masterpiece.

Kirsten Walker, Hamden: "I try to remember how it was when I was a kid, and I just had the same excitement my kids do - to wake up in the morning and know it's a snow day."

Snow days, though, can be a mixed blessing. As the DiMauro's were putting the finishing touches on frosty, down to the eyes made out of coal, Cindy DiMauro was still figuring out who would take care of son David when she went to work.

Cindy DiMauro, Hamden: "I work at a restaurant in North Haven... and I gotta go in."

The DOT says they are keeping their trucks busy, but they are starting to recall some of the private contractors they hired.
