* Some Experts Say Only Limited Cleanup Needed For Stadium
(Hartford-AP)_ Environmental experts say the proposed stadium for the New England Patriots may only require excavation of about 10 feet of soil, reducing the total cleanup the site will require.

The state has struck a deal with the football team to build a new stadium in downtown Hartford. The stadium would anchor a riverfront development called Adriaen's Landing, named for a Dutch explorer who sailed the Connecticut River.

The proposed site has previously been home to a number of industrial facilities and the ground is contaminated with toxic coal tars and such carcinogenic chemicals as benzene.

But Tom Stark of GZA Environment Inc. in Vernon, a "remediation" expert hired by the Adriaen's Landing developers, said most of the contamination is at or below the likely foundation for the stadium.

While about 1 million cubic yards of material will likely be hauled away from the site, presumably to a local landfill, as much as half that amount would be rock, Stark said.

A new round of soil and groundwater tests is expected to begin by the end of the month. Those tests would update decade old data that showed the land and groundwater on the site to be contaminated.

Stark said he believes the original estimate for environmental cleanup at the site, about $10 million, is still on target.
