Mayor Admits Town Pool Discriminated Against Nontraditional Families
(West Hartford-AP)_The mayor of West Hartford is admitting the town's pool policy discriminates against nontraditional families, after more than a year of defending the controversial policy.
Five families, including gay couples, and an unmarried couple and their children, have filed discrimination complaints. They argue the town unfairly bars them from paying the family rate, forcing them to spend two hundred to three hundred more per membership at the Cornerstone Aquatic Center.
But despite a town lawyer's finding in support of the policy, Mayor Rob Bouvier says mistakes were made.
Bouvier says reduced rate swimming passes will be given to any parent or guardian of a child under 21, regardless of marital status.
Robert Kor, an attorney for one of the couples, says the change in policy does not settle the complaints. He says the town is just saying it improperly gave the family discount to couples without children.
Gay Church Elder Retains Post

School Bus Stop Moved After Parent Complains Of View Of "David"
(Shelton-AP)_ A school bus stop in Shelton has been moved after a parent complained his daughter could see a replica of Michaelangelo's "David" from the route.
The bus stop in a private office park passed right by the 15-foot replica of the famous nude.
Mark DelVecchio said that when his 10-year-old daughter told him last week she was offended by the statue, he called her school and asked that the bus stop be moved.
He says with the height of a school bus, his daughter's view of the statue was from the navel down.
The stop was moved down the driveway and out of sight of the statue.
The "David," one of only seven worldwide, was purchased in Italy by developer Robert Scinto.
Scinto has said the statue is one of 20 works of art throughout the complex that he has purchased for the benefit of the workers and the community.
Lawmakers Push to Close Gun Law Loophole
(Hartford-AP) _ At least one day goes by before a suspect arrested for domestic violence can be ordered to surrender his firearms.
He first must be arraigned, then a judge has to issue a protective order forcing him to give up his guns.
Some lawmakers say that gap is just enough time for the suspect to post bail, get a gun and shoot his wife.
Rep. Michael Lawlor and Sen. George Jepsen are trying to prevent such situations through legislation that would permit police to seize any firearms they find at a domestic violence scene.
