* People flock to beach to escape heat
(WTNH) _ There's really just one way to describe this weather: Oppressive! If you've been outdoors even for just a little while you know just how "uncomfortable" it is. But it is a holiday, so while many chose to seek refuge inside in the air conditioning others headed to the great outdoors to "brave" the elements.
News Channel 8's Andrea Stassou reports.

For many people the beach was the place to be, and the water was the place to get some relief! Old and young alike cooled off by immersing themselves several times an hour.

Even those concentrating on their tans had to stay close enough to the shore to stay wet at the same time. But despite their best efforts it was impossible to escape the incredible heat!

Tamara Santiago, Meriden: "Hot, very hot... Getting some color, jumping in water whenever I get too hot."

Andrea: "What's the strategy for keeping cool?"
Pat Santiago, Meriden: "The water, stay close to the water."

Of course not everyone was lucky enough to spend the day relaxing by the water. In New Haven dozens of people spent the day preparing for tonight's fireworks display. That meant a lot of physical activity even in the heat. Many took breaks under tents hoping the shade and their water bottles would provide some relief.

Probably the hardest job today cooking "french fries" in a hot frying pan. Vince Spaduzzi says he may go without the pan after all.

Vince Spaduzzi, S & S Catering: "I don't think so - I put them out here."
Andrea: "Think they'll fry? That hot, huh?"
Spaduzzi: "Yeah, real hot."
"How you holding up?"
Spaduzzi: "Not too bad."
"Trying not to think about it?"
Spaduzzi: "That's right."

You've heard them before, but these tips bear repeating because they can help keep you safe during high heat ad humidity.

  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Wear light colored clothes
  • Don't overexert yourself
