HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Aetna Inc. is selling most of its residential real estate in the city.

The company has reached a tentative agreement to sell 226 apartments in Asylum Hill near the company's Farmington Avenue headquarters to New York-based Alma Realty Inc.

Citing sources it did not identify, The Hartford Courant reported Sunday that the sale is estimated at $3.5 million.

Aetna spokesman Fred Laberge said the sale doesn't reflect a lessening of the company's commitment to the city, but neighborhood leaders are nervous about absentee landlords taking over.

"We worked very hard to get Aetna to sell to a local company," said Ginny Seeley, who heads a neighborhood housing committee. "This is a big concern."

Aetna bought the apartments during the past 50 years and often used them as temporary housing for agents or other employees who were brought to the main office for training.
