* Having a safe Fourth
(WTNH) _ Travelers across the country are hopping in their cars and making their getaways for this Fourth of July weekend. And it's inevitable that with all that traffic there are going to be accidents. In West Haven a van appeared to be resting on top of another car on I-95 in the northbound lane near exit 42. That caused traffic to back up for some distance. We're told no one was hurt.
News Channel 8' Leon Collins offers some tips to make sure this is a holiday to remember for the right reasons.

Despite gas prices that are slightly higher than a year ago, AAA estimates that 37 million Americans will declare their independence an hit the road this weekend.

Jody Amatuli, Connecticut Motor Club: "Well, for those folks who haven't left yet bring something for the children to do. You're going to have a lot of company out on the highway. Make sure your passengers are happy."

Dee Hadley, Florida resident: "For traveling with kids toys, puzzles, lots of stops. Let them run and exert their energy."

Hot weather, crowded roads, and lots of miles can make for a fun fourth but things can go wrong between point A and point point B.

Keith Cudgma, Branford Firestone: "Have the fluid levels checked. Have the coolant system checked, especially prior to going on a long trip. Make sure the air pressure in the tires and the condition of the tires are inspected so that you don't have a breakdown. Check the spare tire."

Cars run extremely hot in humid summer weather. Air conditioning systems add even more heat to the engine, so you want to make sure the systems are a-ok.

And for people who still get hot under the collar a few words of advice from the top guy at the Department of Motor Vehicles about keeping your road rage in check.

Jose Salinas, Commissioner DMV: "I tell folks if you feel compelled to wave to another driver please use ALL fingers when you do so. Don't use one finger. That's just going to get you into trouble."
