Scandal 1600 Senate Adopts Witness Procedure - Trial May End In February
(Capitol Hill-AP) _ The end could be in sight for President Clinton's impeachment trial. The Senate has approved a plan calling for the trial to conclude by February 12th. But first, Monica Lewinsky and two other witnesses will give depositions next week. Despite objections from Democrats, the deposition of the witnesses will be videotaped. But minority leader Tom Daschle would prefer the tapes are never made public. He says Democrats are also concerned about live witnesses. He says they don't want what he calls "the spectacle" of Monica Lewinsky or anyone else testifying live. He says they want to protect "what little dignity" Lewinsky has left. Lewinsky will be deposed Monday, followed by presidential aide Sidney Blumenthal and Clinton confidante Vernon Jordan Tuesday and Wednesday.

When Lewinsky shows up for her deposition, it won't be as simple as sitting her down, turning on the camcorder and asking questions. At least 18 hours before each session, Republican prosecutors have to have a list of all exhibits they'll enter into the record. Those lists must go to President Clinton's lawyers. The cameras will roll for Lewinsky, Blumenthal and Jordan. But the tapes and transcripts will be kept confidential unless the Senate votes to make them public. As for what the three witnesses can be asked, questions are limited to matters already on the record in the articles of impeachment.
