Scandal 1600 House Wraps Up Arguments in Clinton Impeachment Trial
(Washington-AP) _ With the help of a letter from a Chicago third-grader, the chief House prosecutor has wrapped up his team's opening statement in the Senate, telling senators they must remove President Clinton from office. Henry Hyde says Clinton has "broken his covenant of trust with the American people." He said senators would "break faith" with everyone who has fought on behalf of the United States, if they agree to tolerate "one law for the ruler and another for the ruled." Hyde read a letter from a Chicago youngster who said he doesn't believe the president any more. The child wrote that he has to write an essay when he lies and that he thinks President Clinton should have to do the same. The boy's father wrote that he'd caught his son lying and that part of the child's defense was that the president lies. Other House Republicans today made the case that lying under oath and obstruction of justice are offenses that warrant removal from office. They referred back to impeachments of judges by the Senate for perjury and also to the words of the Founding Fathers. The Senate trial is now in recess until Tuesday, when the Clinton team will start presenting its opening statement.
*Here's more on today's impeachment activity.
