* Lawmakers Improve Witness Protection Program Following Boy's Death
(Hartford-WTNH) _ The murder of an 8 year old child witness has Connecticut leaders talking about our witness protection program, and ways to improve it.
News Channel 8's Judy Chong reports.

Leroy Brown, Junior and his mother, Karen Clarke, are no longer with us, but perhaps out of this tragedy some cod will come out of it. This morning lawmakers announced improvements to the witness protection program in the wake of the deaths of Brown and Clarke.

The enhancements include better use of resources for protecting witnesses, a clear protocol for how a witness can get protection, and better surveillance of dangerous suspects out on bond.

Sen. Donald Williams, (D) Killingly: "The protection of witnesses in criminal cases is the foundation of resolving those cases. If we cannot follow through on that commitment, then the criminal justice system and the foundation of it is at risk."

Lawmakers will also look at different degrees of protection for witnesses. State authorities said Karen Clarke declined protection because she found having an officer stationed right outside her house too intrusive.

As for the issue of money, lawmakers say there is plenty of money in the witness protection fund. But if the fund needs more money in the future, lawmakers say they will find ways to get more money in there.

A memorial service for Brown and Clarke will be held Thursday at Refuge Temple Church of God, on Main Street in Bridgeport, from 6:00-7:30 pm. The church is prepared to handle 400 mourners, but an overflow crowd is expected.
