* Town to Shut Down on King Holiday
(Wallingford-AP) _ (AP)_ Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson has decided to shut down city government in observance of Martin Luther King Day, NAACP officials said Monday. Dickinson could not be reached for confirmation. Wallingford has been the only town in the state that did not give city employees paid time off in observance of the King holiday, which this year falls on Jan. 18. Roger Vann, president of the Connecticut chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the mayor made the decision Monday after the city's unions refused to accept a compromise offered last week by the NAACP. The proposed compromise would have added a paid holiday on King's birthday every other year. On alternate years, union members would have celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day and town offices would have remained open on another of the workers' 12 paid holidays. Dickinson has said King was a hero but 12 paid holidays are enough. The unions have taken the position that the holiday should be added to the current list.
