Airliner Evacuated Because of Message Left in Magazine
(Windsor Locks-AP) _ A Florida-bound airliner was evacuated because of worries about a message found scrawled inside an in-flight magazine. State police and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the plane at Bradley International Airport for about an hour but found nothing suspicious, said state police Lt. Robert Duffy. Delta Charter Flight 9912, carrying 150 Pratt & Whitney employees and family members to West Palm Beach, was still at the departure gate Saturday evening when a passenger flipping through the airline's magazine discovered the message, Duffy said. Duffy could not give details about the message, but said it referred to a Middle Eastern group known for terrorism. "The passenger considered it suspicious, a veiled threat," Duffy said. "It got back to the pilot, who thought he better go ahead and evacuate the plane." The passengers spent the night at a hotel in the airport, and left for Florida Sunday morning. The group had been visiting Connecticut after being offered transfers here from Pratt & Whitney's facility in West Palm Beach, said Mark Sullivan, a spokesman for the jet engine maker.

Worker Sues Yale
(New Haven-AP) _ A 52-year-old woman who worked as a fund-raiser for Yale has sued the university for alleged age and sex discrimination and is seeking $5 million. A jury is expected to begin hearing Ann Pecora Diamond's case on Wednesday. Diamond worked at the university for 15 years, as a researcher in the medical school and then as a fund-raiser in the development office. She was fired in 1993, and says the university hired a less experienced man to replace her. Diamond says the university fostered the careers of young men and did the opposite for older women. She says the firing ruined her career and caused her emotional suffering. She says the money would pay for lost wages and health benefits. She is also seeking a new job at Yale. The university says her claim has no merit, and it plans to fight the suit.
Utility Companies Brace for Year 2000
(AP) _ Turning on the light is easy. You just flip a switch. But what's going to happen when the Year 2000 arrives? Utility companies are trying to figure that out. The utility industry is also affected by the so-called Y2K problem. Computers only recognize the last two digits of the year. So when the next century comes, many computers will recognize it as the year 1900, not the year 2000. The industry has self-imposed a deadline of June 30th to iron out the problem. But several companies including Northeast Utilities say they will be about a month late. And, they can't guarantee a transition will be perfect or smooth sailing. Nor can they guarantee the lights will stay on. Instead, the say they are optimistic there will only be minimal problems.
