* Small Town Gets Multiplex
(Jewett City-WTNH) _ Coming soon to the small borough of Jewett City: A new six-screen movie theatre! Developers plan to convert an old supermarket into a state-of-the-art cinema! In the past, Jewett City has had trouble with bored teenagers loitering on downtown streets. The question is will this change all that?
News Channel 8's Peter Standring reports from our Southeastern Newsroom at The Day.

Rich Frappier and Nick Flexer share a common complaint. Like a lot of kids their age, they say their town, Jewett City, has little to offer them.

Rich Frappier, 16 years old: "Yeah, it's still pretty dull here in Jewett City, there's not much to do. They've been trying to get a teen center going but haven't had much success."

Now, there's new hope. Local businessmen want to convert a vacant supermarket into a cinema, and plan to invest more than $2 million in it. The developers say it's going to be state of the art, with all the most modern features. Most importantly, they plan to have six screens.

Ray welsh and his partners think the place will draw people of all ages, but, factor in an arcade and party room, and he says that'll also mean crowds of teenagers.

Ray Welsh, Cinema Developer: "It 'll be tremendous. They're going be wow! It's different, state of the art, different than any of the other competition theatres around here."

Including the 'state twin' up the road, that welsh runs now. there's only two small screens there, and according to young people: not a lot of variety.

Jasmine Sherman, 13 years old: "Me and my friends go to the movies every Friday even though they're playing the same movies. It gets boring because they do play the same ones. They only have two movie theatres."

Sherman and other teens we talked to are excited about having a bigger theatre with more selection, but business owners in town doubt that the new complex will satisfy all of Jewett City's bored teenagers.

Charlene Schultz, "Charlene's Diner" "I don't know about this generation. It's hard. Some of 'em, nothing excites 'em. The good kids are all at home, it's the other ones that hang around the streets."
