Another traffic nightmare along I-95, this time just north of exit 92 in North Stonington. As crews cleared away what was left of two burned-out tractor-trailers, drivers were slowly detoured around the accident along back roads.
Sam Huppert, Westerly, R.I.: "We're trying to get to the airport." But for most of the day it did slow people down. The accident happened around 5:30 this morning. Officials say one truck was broken down on the side of the highway and a second truck came along and plowed into it. Buddy Turner, No. Stonington Fire Dept.: "When I got here the first truck was totally involved, the second truck, the cab was fully involved... Fuel tanks had broke, so there was fire out in the road." Fortunately the driver of the first truck had gone for a mechanic and wasn't inside when his rig was hit. But the second driver was trapped. For him, mechanic Ed Thompson showed up just in time. Ed Thompson, Ashaway, R.I.: "The driver of the second truck was still in there, it was on fire, but he screamed to me. I got him and pulled him down the back side of the truck... He would've died no doubt about it." As fire fighters took care of the burning trucks and their smoldering cargo, cleanup crews got started on the mess. It was not an easy job. Along with the debris and wreckage, crews also had to deal with ice and slush. It's so cold out, all the water they used to douse the flames was freezing on the highway. ©1999 WTNH-TV |
